Adiós, AirPods

The Atlantic - Technology

Apple promises to put an AI interpreter in everyone's ears. It couldn't even help me order tamales. Earlier this week, I stopped for breakfast in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, a largely Hispanic neighborhood where street vendors sell tamales and rice pudding out of orange Gatorade coolers. I speak some Spanish, but I wanted to test out Apple's new "Live Translation" feature, which has been advertised as a sort of interpreter in your ears. I popped in my AirPods, pulled up the Translate app, and approached.

Extending the power of Azure AI to Microsoft 365 users

#artificialintelligence

Today, Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President of Modern Life and Devices, announced the availability of new Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriptions. In his blog, he shared a few examples of how Microsoft 365 is innovating to deliver experiences powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to billions of users every day. Whether through familiar products like Outlook and PowerPoint, or through new offerings such as Presenter Coach and Microsoft Editor across Word, Outlook, and the web, Microsoft 365 relies on Azure AI to offer new capabilities that make their users even more productive. Azure AI is a set of AI services built on Microsoft's breakthrough innovation from decades of world-class research in vision, speech, language processing, and custom machine learning. What is particularly exciting is that Azure AI provides our customers with access to the same proven AI capabilities that power Microsoft 365, Xbox, HoloLens, and Bing.

How to create a machine learning dataset from scratch?

My grandmother was an outstanding cook. So when I recently came across her old cook book I tried to read through some of the recipes, hoping I could recreate some of the dishes I enjoyed as a kid. However this turned out harder than expected since the book was printed around 1911 in a typeface called fraktur. For example the letter "A" looks like a "U" in fraktur and every time I see a "Z" in fraktur I read a "3" (see Figure 2). So the idea emerged to develop a pipeline that will create a live translation of the fraktur letters into a modern typeface.

Skype's live translations are now available in Russian

Engadget

Since launching last year, Microsoft has steadily been building out Skype's automatic live-translating ability, and making it even easier to speak with more people around the world. The feature, which translates the voice of the person on the other end of your skype call into instant subtitles, can now handle voice-to-text for Russian, in addition to the eight other languages it already supports. As the eighth most popular spoken language in the world, it makes sense that Russian would join English, Spanish, French, German, Mandarin, Italian, Portuguese and Arabic. If you're only texting via Skype chat, rather than video calling, Skype also supports text-to-text translations in over 50 different languages. With so many Russian dialects, Skype Translator is bound to be a little clunky with the language at first, but the company claims its built-in machine learning layer will continue to improve the translations as more and more people use it.
